At least 35 people were killed and 43 injured when a hit-and-run driver rammed into a crowd at a sports center late Monday, authorities in southern China said Tuesday.

Police in Zhuhai city, Guangdong province, said a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan drove a crossover SUV into a public exercising at the center at 7:48 p.m. before attempting to flee the center Scene.

Fan was arrested in his vehicle and found with self-inflicted knife wounds, including to the neck, the statement said. The suspect was unconscious when he was arrested and taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Authorities said Fan could be questioned but was suspected of committing a crime against public safety.
