House explosion in South Jordan caused by natural gas leak

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – The deadly house explosion in South Jordan on Wednesday was caused by a natural gas leak. Investigators said Thursday they were still searching for the source of the leak.

A 15-year-old boy was killed in the house explosion. His family has asked for privacy.

Neighbors surrounded the area Thursday with blue ribbons and lights and organized a *GoFundMe for the family, KSL TV reported.

Investigators with the South Jordan Fire Department said Thursday, “Additional investigators will be on scene throughout the weekend and hope to have more information available by early next week.”

Natural gas pipelines in Utah

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, nearly “8 out of 10 Utah households use natural gas as their primary heating fuel.”

Bryan Stinson, outreach specialist for Be Ready Utah, said using natural gas is generally safe.

However, there are several things you can do to ensure your home is safe.

“A really good thing is to have your gas appliances serviced annually,” Stinson told Dave & Dujanovic.

Stinson said many people have natural gas-powered water heaters, furnaces, fireplaces, ovens and even clothes dryers.

Additionally, Stinson recommends that you keep your gas meter easily accessible at all times.

It is also important to keep flammable items away from your gas appliances.

If you smell gas or hear gas leaking in your home, get everyone out of the house and to a safe distance, Stinson said.

Once you are a safe distance away, call 911 or your local gas company.
