I-70 and I-25 closures due to heavy snow

A winter storm is expected to snarl traffic across Colorado today and Saturday, closing roads and threatening to make travel difficult or impossible on portions of Interstate 25 and Interstate 70.

The Colorado Department of Transportation warned that travel conditions could become “extreme to impossible” on Friday and Saturday, expressing particular concern about I-70 east of Denver and I-25 south of Pueblo.

Update 9 p.m.:

Commercial vehicles and vehicles with trailers of all types are prohibited from traveling on sections of I-70, I-25, US 285, US 40 and US 6 until 8 a.m. Saturday, according to CDOT.

Commercial vehicles and vehicles with trailers are not allowed to drive on:

  • I-70 from Golden to Silverthorne
  • I-25 from C-470 to North Academy Boulevard
  • US 285 from Morrison to Fairplay
  • US 40 from Winter Park to Empire over Berthoud Pass
  • US 6 from Keystone to Georgetown over Loveland Pass
  • US 6 from Golden to I-70 through Clear Creek Canyon

“This restriction is intended to reduce the likelihood of tractor-trailer and other serious failures, which require extensive manpower and specialized equipment to clear and which often result in extended highway closures,” transportation officials said in a news release.

Commercial vehicles stranded in the Denver metro area can park overnight at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 W. Sixth Avenue in Golden.

Motorways closed from 6:00 p.m. for safety reasons:
