Incident on Autobahn 3 leads to traffic delays on Tuesday afternoon

This story has been updated.

All lanes of Highway 3 near the overpass at El Dorado Road, north of the Chico Way exit, are now open after being closed for several hours this afternoon.

WSP Trooper Katherine Weatherwax said the highway reopened after 4:15 p.m. after an incident involving a person on the El Dorado Road overpass was resolved.

The highway was backed up for miles in both directions for about two hours, from northbound Highway 3 just past the Kitsap Way on-ramp in Bremerton and the southbound lanes of Highway 3 near the Trigger Avenue on-ramp north of Silverdale. Traffic also increased through Bremerton, with delays occurring in the southbound lanes of Warren Avenue into downtown as drivers tried to avoid congestion.

First responders diverted traffic off the highway, Weatherwax initially said, as negotiators tried to rescue a woman who was threatening to jump off a bridge. Weatherwax says the person is now safe and was transported from the scene in a support vehicle.

According to a WSP post on

Weatherwax advised drivers to exit southbound on Newberry Hill Road or northbound on Chico Way to avoid the area.
