‘It’s just not worth it’ where El Paso County truck drivers seek refuge amid new CDOT restriction

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – On Friday, CDOT implemented new restrictions on trailer vehicles, banning them from driving on portions of I-25 and I-70. We spoke with semi-truck drivers who said they stay off the road to avoid dangerous driving conditions.

“Some guys take more chances than necessary. When you feel the pressure of the load, stop and stop. It’s just not worth it,” said Tim Allen, a truck driver.

As part of CDOT restrictions, trailers and towed vehicles will not be allowed to travel from 4:00 p.m. Friday to 8:00 a.m. Saturday:

  • I-25 in both directions from Mile Point 180 (south of Plum Creek Pkwy) to 150 (N. Academy Blvd) 8 a.m
  • I-70 in both directions from Mile Point 259 (Golden) to 205 (Silverthorne)
  • US 285 in both directions from Mile Point 250 (Morrison) to 184 (Fairplay)
  • US 40 in both directions from Mile Point 234 (Winter Park) to 256 (Empire)
  • US 6 in both directions from Mile Point 217 (Keystone) to 229 (Georgetown)

A tow truck driver says he’s seen many cars and semi-trucks get stuck or in collisions and he’s glad the restrictions have been put in place.

“The new restrictions are actually good for the community.” If you don’t need to drive anywhere, don’t drive anywhere. Accidents happen everywhere. People fall into ditches and off cliffs. If you can, stay at home, that’s my recommendation. But we’re out here, AAA, we’re here to help,” said Lorenzo Griffin, AAA tow driver.
