Jack Del Rio is leaving the Wisconsin staff after being arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated

Jack Del Rio has resigned from his role on Wisconsin’s coaching staff after he was arrested near campus last week for driving while intoxicated.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Former NFL head coach Jack Del Rio resigned from his position on Wisconsin’s coaching staff Monday after he was arrested near campus last week for driving while intoxicated.

Del Rio, the former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders, joined Wisconsin’s staff in August as a senior adviser to head coach Luke Fickell.

“I am grateful to Coach Fickell and the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity to work with such a talented coaching and support staff and some of the best young soccer players in the country,” Del Rio said in a statement. “I have decided to give up my position with the team so that they can concentrate fully on the rest of the season.”

Madison police said Del Rio was arrested early Friday on a first-offense charge of OWI after a vehicle hit a stop sign and crashed through a fence before coming to rest in a yard. Police said Del Rio left the area and was showing signs of impairment when they arrived at 12:35 a.m

“He’s going to move on and resign and move on,” Fickell said. “It’s a difficult situation. Decisions for which we must all take full responsibility. So that’s what Jack is going to do and we’re going to keep moving forward.”

Del Rio, 61, came to Wisconsin after spending the past four years as the Washington Commanders’ defensive coordinator. He was released after twelve games into the 2023 season.

Del Rio had a 93-94 record in his 12-year career as an NFL head coach, including stints with the Jaguars (2003-11) and Raiders (2015-17). After a standout college career at Southern California, he played linebacker in the NFL from 1985 to 1995.

Wisconsin (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten) has lost its last two games before Saturday’s home game against No. 1 Oregon (10-0, 7-0, No. 1 CFP).
