Jaxson Hayes is out for one to two weeks with an ankle sprain, marking the latest injury setback for the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers will have to do without center Jaxson Hayes for at least the next few games.

Hayes suffered a sprained left ankle during practice on Tuesday and will miss Wednesday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies, the team announced. Hayes will be reevaluated in a week or two.

The injury is the latest the Lakers have dealt with among their centers. Christian Wood is still recovering from offseason knee surgery and Anthony Davis was stabbed in the eye during their 121-103 win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. Davis left the game early and was cleared to play Wednesday night, even though it was the same eye in which he sustained a corneal abrasion twice last season.

Hayes is averaging 6.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season, his second with the Lakers after spending his first four seasons in the league with the New Orleans Pelicans. The 24-year-old also posted a season-high 12 points and six rebounds in Sunday’s win over the Raptors. Hayes stepped in to replace Davis after his eye injury later in the competition.

Wood won’t be back for the Lakers anytime soon either. Wood underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in September to repair a knee problem that plagued him at the end of last season. Wood has started to experience knee pain in recent days and will now be out for at least another month.

Besides Davis, the only other center on the Lakers’ roster is two-way player Christian Koloko – who was cleared to play by the league after missing all of last season with a blood clot problem. He played two games for the Lakers this season and one for their G League affiliate.

The Lakers enter Wednesday night’s game with a record of 6-4 and are coming off two straight wins. They will open the NBA Cup, which began league-wide on Tuesday, on Friday against the San Antonio Spurs.
