Killing of 13-year-old in his Maryland home unsolved after two years – NBC4 Washington

It’s been two years since 13-year-old Jayz Agnew was shot and killed while raking leaves in his own yard.

The case is still unsolved. Police searched the Hillcrest Heights area Friday in hopes of getting new leads and finally finding out who killed Jayz and why.

Jayz’s mother, Juanita Agnew, said she was grateful police hadn’t stopped looking for answers.

“I think this helps me get out of a state of grief. As sad as it is, Jayz’s case is still under investigation,” she said.

Jayz was a middle school student when he was shot.

“It’s pointless and frustrating because we don’t know who and why,” Agnew said.

Agnew turned her sadness into activism. She helped pass a county law making it easier for residents to install security cameras in their homes. According to police, there was no video in the area that would have assisted in the investigation.

Agnew just started a foundation in her son’s name. The aim is to help boys make the transition to manhood. The foundation is a way for Agnew to raise awareness for her son and keep him alive.

“I haven’t given up and I still hope that one day someone will say something because we believe someone knows what happened to Jayz,” his mother said.

A walk is planned for next Saturday for Jayz calling for an end to gun violence.
