Lakemont Elementary invites the community to honor Ruby Bridges’ legacy on November 14th

Connect Lakemont Elementary School at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 14, to honor the legacy of Ruby Bridges and her courageous journey toward desegregation.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is celebrated each year nationwide on November 14th in honor of Ruby Bridges, a civil rights activist who became the first black child to attend an all-white school in the South on November 14, 1960. 6- One-year-old Bridges had to be escorted by four US marshals on her way to school as she was greeted by a crowd of angry white parents and protesters, many of whom threatened her and threw things at her.

Now 70 years old, Ruby Bridges is a well-known civil rights icon, activist, speaker and author who has written several books about her experiences, including Through My Eyes and This Is Your Time. Bridges also founded the Ruby Bridges Foundation, a nonprofit that fights racism and advocates for equal rights.

One will be held at Lakemont Elementary, located at 51 Gibbons Ave March in honor of Ruby Bridges on Thursday starting at 8:45 a.m. on the kickball field. Anyone who would like to participate in honoring her legacy is welcome to join. Attendees are asked to wear purple and bring signs in support of Bridges.
