Latest US election updates: Trump prepares to make top appointments after Harris vows to help transition

Trump wins, Harris concedes and Biden sits down to speakpublished at 05:03 Greenwich Mean Time

Good morning from the UK, where we take over from our colleagues in Washington DC and begin new live coverage (don’t worry, you can still check out our live election night coverage here).

The outcome of this election is a foregone conclusion and we know it Donald Trump is expected to return to the White House – but there are still many open questions that need to be clarified.

Results in several states are still being tallied and we will share the final numbers with you as soon as they are available.

We also pay attention to results in Elections to the House of Representatives and Senate. We already know that Republicans have taken control of the Senate, but the situation in the House is a little more unclear.

Although it appears that Republicans will get a majority there too, we won’t know for sure until a few more results come in.

Away from the ballot box, we learned this overnight Trump will begin naming his Cabinet within days. We’ll be watching for signs of who will be on his top team.

Joe Biden should speak at 16:00 GMT (11:00 EST) – his first appearance since losing Kamala Harris. Stay with us.
