Lions vs Texans result, live updates: Houston is in control after taking a commanding lead at halftime

Only four of the NFL’s 32 teams have yet to play in the Super Bowl, and two of them will take center stage in Week 10 of Sunday Night Football, which could take place in New Orleans in February. The Detroit Lions (7-1) and Houston Texans (6-3) meet in Houston, both with their eyes on deep playoff runs this season. The Lions were on fire, winning six straight during that period and averaging 36 points per game, defeating the playoff contenders Vikings, Packers and Cardinals. Jared Goff completed 83% of his passes with 13 touchdowns and one interception during the winning streak.

While CJ Stroud is grabbing the headlines in Houston — he’s on pace for another 4,000-yard passing season — the Texans’ defense has taken over and sits atop the AFC South. Houston ranks second in the NFL in total defense, allowing just over 280 yards per game. The Texans are coming off a bit of a bye, having last played in a Thursday Night Football loss to the Jets in New York on Halloween night.

Carlton Davis III grabs CJ Stroud and Detroit is in business, deep in Houston territory. And right on cue with Dan Campbell’s taped interview airing on NBC.

  • Halftime: Texans 23, Lions 7

Without some timely stops to force field goals, this would be a bust. Houston did almost everything right in its passing offense, with CJ Stroud going 14 of 20 for 164 yards and a touchdown in the first half. John Metchie has four catches for 64 yards. Houston has just four rushing yards on 13 attempts.

The Texans’ defense was equally dominant with three turnovers – all interceptions by Jared Goff, but two were on tipped balls and one on a Hail Mary, so none of the three suggest Goff is struggling. What would That Detroit’s passing game is struggling is suggested by him being just 7 of 17 for 91 yards over the last six games after completing 83% of his passes over the Lions.

  • Metchie ends the drive with his first NFL touchdown

The former Alabama star fought his way back from a leukemia diagnosis in 2022, and with Stefon Diggs and Nico Collins sidelined, he was forced to step up, and he now holds a surprising 23-7 lead over the Lions at halftime, as do the Texans .

  • John Metchie with a big lead as Houston marches down the field hoping for a late goal

  • Detroit has increased the pressure on CJ Stroud

The Lions forced the Texans’ first punt late in the second quarter.

  • In the sudden turnaround, the Lions make a stop

After another turnover that forced Detroit’s defense against the wall, the Lions forced a third field goal from Ka’imi Fairbairn. Houston scored on all four of its possessions but only had one touchdown to take a 16-7 lead.

  • The Texans get another turnover from Jared Goff

Denico Autry forced the INT, and after bouncing around, Henry To’oto’o came in with the ball, and the Texans are back in business, starting a drive deep in Houston territory.

  • The Lions make a stop on 3rd down after the penalty to force 4th down

Ka’imi Fairbairn scores for the 11th time this season on a 50-yard kick. This hit from 56 yards and made the score 13:7. The big penalty cost Detroit three points, but their offense got rolling in the final series, so they may be in a rhythm to get the points back.

  • Huge improvement for the Texans in pass interference penalty

A 41-yard pickup for Houston flips the field after Terrion Arnold beats Xavier Hutchinson for the flag.

  • THIS is the Detroit we’ve seen in the last few weeks

  • James Houston stops the Texans’ momentum with the third down sack

The Lions were reeling after Joe Mixon’s big catch-and-run, but after a penalty inside the five-yard line, Houston used a sack by CJ Strout to force a field goal attempt and tie the score 10-10 to bring. 0 towards the end of the first quarter.

  • Joe Mixon gets 36 points for the big gainer

Joe Mixon is already off to a great start in the first quarter. He’s hit 100-plus over the last four games and is off to a big start in the passing game.

  • The Lions were a bit confused at the start

After the first drive turnover, Derek Stingley narrowly missed an interception on a deep ball to Jameson Williams and the Lions had a delay of game on their second series and had to punt. It’s VERY early, but Houston looked great on both sides in the first half of the first quarter.

  • Joe Mixon scores on the jet sweep

The Texans capitalized on the first interception and Mixon found paydirt on CJ Stroud’s pop pass. Mixon has battled some injury issues this season, but the Texans need him alive and well if they want to continue to be a Super Bowl threat. Houston converted a 3rd-and-10 and a 3rd-and-16 drive en route to the opening score.

  • Big loss by Joe Mixon on second down

Carlton Davis III – of Tampa Bay fame – forced Joe Mixon into a big loss by hitting a 3rd-and-16.

  • Jimmie Ward scores the ball after a deflection from Jalen Pitre

  • Detroit takes over the opener in Houston.

The Lions won the take and took the ball first, and during their six-game winning streak, the offense was extremely efficient, as Jared Goff completed 83% of his passes and threw just one interception against 13 touchdowns in that span.
