INDIANAPOLIS – Bennedict Mathurin scored 38 points, Tyrese Haliburton had 35 points and 14 assists and the undermanned Pacers defeated the Knicks 132-121 on Sunday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Pacers improved to 5-4. The Knicks fell to 4-5.

Myles Turner added 26 points and Pascal Siakam added 14. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 33 points. Karl Anthony Towns had 30. Former IU star OG Anunoby added 25.

The Pacers’ fourth quarter was one of their best of the season as they finished the game with 40 points on 14 of 22 shooting, including 8 of 13 from 3 and 4 of 5 at the line. The Pacers scored 1.59 points per possession in the fourth.

Tyrese Haliburton hit a 3-pointer from 25 feet and the Pacers have a lead of 10. Haliburton had 31 points and 12 assists in what was probably his best offensive performance of the season. He also just set up Ben Sheppard for a critical corner 3.

Myles Turner just practiced two consecutive 3-pointers. He has 23 points. Tyrese Haliburton just delivered two assists and still has 11 points to go for 28 points. Bennedict Mathurin has up to 33 points. Pascal Siakam had 14. The players the Pacers needed to get through all of their injuries did so tonight. The Pacers are 8 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 5 from 3 in the fourth.

Pascal Siakam just hit a 3 after a three-pointer from TJ McConnell to tie the score, and then it turned out that 3 gave the Pacers the lead because OG Anunoby’s 3-pointer early in the frame was rejected in video review because he went to the sidelines. Big breakthrough for the Pacers.

There were a ton of fouls on both sides, and the Pacers stuck with it. They were 12 of 14 from the line in the third period, while the Knicks were 11 of 12. The Pacers scored 1.30 points per possession in the third period, while the Knicks averaged 1.20.

As is often the case, once the Pacers started to gain some momentum, the Pacers really let the Knicks get rolling. The 6-0 run here puts the Knicks back in the lead.

Jarace Walker just hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Pacers the lead back, and they’re 18-6 overall. The Pacers are 8 of 12 from the field, 4 of 6 from 3 in the quarter and are scoring 1.46 points per possession.

The Pacers battled the Knicks blow for blow and the game ended tied with 9:52 left in the third period, but the Knicks went on a 10-0 run. The Knicks are 6 in the quarter. The Pacers are 2 of 6.

Bennedict Mathurin and Tyrese Haliburton help the Pacers gain some momentum, but the Knicks continue to have answers because the Pacers don’t have great matchups with their stars. A deep jumper from OG Anunoby and a 3-pointer from Jalen Brunson give the Knicks a 3-point lead at halftime.

At halftime, the Pacers shot 22 of 49 from the floor, 9 of 23 from 3, 5 of 6 at the line for 1.10 points per possession. The Knicks were 25 of 44, 6 of 15 from 3, 5 of 7 for 1.19 points per possession. Bennedict Mathurin had 21 points on 7 of 9 shooting, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Tyrese Haliburton has 14 of 5 of 8 shooting, including 3 of 5 from 3. Anunoby leads the way, the Knicks have 19 of 7 of 10 shooting, Brunson is 15 of 6 of 8 shooting, Towns has 11.

The Pacers got shots on goal from Bennedict Mathurin and Tyrese Haliburton in this sequence. Both are 3 of 3 from the floor, with two 3-pointers in the quarter. Mathurin has 10 points in that period for 21 so far in the game. Haliburton had eight points and 13 for the afternoon.

The Pacers struggled to keep the offense going, making just two of their first eight shots in the period. The Knicks are now 5 of 10 and 3 of 6 from the field. It shows how deep the Pacers dig into their bench.

The final 3:57 of the first game was when the Pacers had to dig deep into their bench with Nembhard, Nesmith and Toppin. Rookie Johnny Furphy and two-way contract players Quenton Jackson and Enrique Freeman made appearances, as did TJ McConnell and Jarace Walker. Only McConnell scored in that bracket, but the Pacers still outscored the Knicks 7-3 in that stretch. At the end of the first period, the Pacers are 12 of 28 from the floor, 5 of 12 from 3 and 1.07 points per possession. The Knicks are 11 of 21, 1 of 5, 3 of 4 at the line with 1.01 points per possession.

The Pacers’ momentum disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared. The Knicks retook the lead with a 6-0 run and the three shots came after easy layups by Miles McBride, Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby.

The Pacers are on an 11-2 run and are starting to get the offense going. Tyrese Haliburton is showing something juicy out there. He hit a 3 and already has five assists moving the ball forward. Bennedict Mathurin already has eight points on 3 of 4 shooting, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range, and Haliburton just gave him a shot.

With Nesmith and Nembhard out, it’s not at all easy to keep up with the Knicks’ starting lineup on defense. Ben Sheppard has Jalen Brunson, Bennedict Mathurin is on Mikal Bridges, Tyrese Haliburton has to guard Josh Hart. Pascal Siakam is with OG Anunoby and Myles Turner is with Karl Anthony Towns. And from the bench it becomes even more difficult.

The Knicks are 6 of 9 from the floor so far. All five starters have at least one bucket. The Pacers are 5 of 9, but the Knicks are averaging 1.45 points per possession.

The Pacers’ lineup is the same as Friday, with the exception of Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith.

In his pregame press conference, Rick Carlisle said Aaron Nesmith is out at least until December, Andrew Nembhard is out for about two weeks and Obi Toppin is also out for Sunday’s game.

TJ McConnell is available after being listed as questionable and missing Friday’s game due to illness.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said guard Cameron Payne is out. Miles McBride is a game-time decision.

Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith is out for the fourth straight game with a sprained left ankle. Point guards TJ McConnell (illness) and guard Andrew Nembhard (knee soreness) were listed as questionable after missing Friday’s game in Charlotte. Forward Obi Toppin (left ankle sprain) was also questionable.

Centers Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman are out long-term due to torn Achilles tendons.

The Knicks have forward Precious Achiuwa (left hamstring strain) and center Mitchell Robinson (left ankle surgery) out and have not played yet this season. Reserve guards Miles McBride (illness) and Cameron Payne (left hamstring strain) are questionable.

5:00 p.m. ET Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Nat Newell: Knicks 111-89

The injury-plagued Pacers are not in a good position to compete against the Knicks’ frontline wingers Brunson, Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart. Indiana’s advantage – depth – will likely be used up with Aaron Newsmith out and TJ McConnell, Obi Toppin and Andrew Nembhard all questionable. Unless Tyrese Haliburton (14.7 ppg, 37.9%, 25.4% 3s, 7.7 apg) suddenly starts playing like an All-NBA player again, the Pacers won’t be able to keep up.
