The College Football Playoff and its new 12-team format are just around the corner. Until then, the football gods will give us a weekly overview of the rankings and predictions.

Every Tuesday, the CFP rankings are restructured to reflect the previous weekend’s results. This Tuesday the show begins at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN. The release of the second rankings of the season will occur between games in the State Farm Champions Classic, so the timing is approximate.

The top four seeds in the tournament will be awarded to the four top-seeded conference champions. Each of them also receives a bye for the first round.

The fifth seed conference champion is also guaranteed a spot in the CFP, but is not guaranteed the No. 5 seed. Places 5 to 12 will be determined based on the final ranking of the selection committees. If the fifth-ranked conference champion is ranked outside the top-12, they will receive the No. 12 seed in the playoffs.

Each of the four quarterfinal games and both semifinal games are played in the current New Year’s Six Bowls. These bowls include Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Cotton and Peach bowls. As with the four-team playoffs, these bowls alternate between hosting semifinal and quarterfinal games each year.

In 2024, the quarterfinal bowl games will be the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. The semifinal bowl games will be the Cotton and Orange Bowls.

The 8:30 p.m. ET start time listed for tonight’s CFP Rankings show was merely an approximation. In reality, the show was scheduled to begin after the end of the men’s college basketball game between Michigan State and Kansas. The teams compete in the State Farm Champions Classic.
