Man spies on kids loitering on camera – so he blows a ‘death whistle’

A group of neighborhood kids share a story for life after a man decides to scare them off his property in the best possible way.

Music producer and sound engineer Stephen Kane lives in Huntsville, Alabama, and has a large collection of “unusual instruments,” including an Aztec death whistle.

The mysterious instrument, first discovered during an excavation of an Aztec temple, is shaped like a skull and makes a sound similar to wind, according to a report in the journal The World of Music.

But larger reproductions take the form of a loud, frightening scream – which is exactly what Kane had on his list when he saw a group of children loitering outside his property in the lead-up to Halloween.

“I was working on music and had gotten an alert on my Ring doorbell,” Kane explained Newsweek.

“There were kids hanging around, which isn’t unusual and really doesn’t bother me. My neighborhood is very active and unique. As Halloween approached and the death whistle was nearby, I came up with the idea of scaring them.”

He continued, “I carried the whistle into the backyard and pointed it in a direction where the sound of the whistle would reflect off the side of my neighbor’s house and be directed toward the street for maximum volume.”

Stephen Kane saw children hanging out in front of his property and saw the perfect opportunity for a prank. He grabbed his Aztec Death Whistle instrument, which emits a high-pitched scream.

The moment Kane used the whistle to scare the kids has since gone viral after he shared the ring footage on his Instagram account @sprkane on October 30.

With over 5.3 million views and 300,000 likes, the video shows a group of seemingly young teenagers standing right in front of Kane’s driveway, just talking to each other.

In the caption, he wrote, “POV: Kids hang out in your front yard, but you own an Aztec death whistle. *grabs the pipe and goes into the backyard*.”

The quiet night is then completely broken by a loud, long, frightening screech – Kane blows the whistle – and after initially standing completely still in fright, the boys then start screaming and cursing, with some nervous laughter, and they run off down the street.

“I caught her with the death whistle,” Kane laughed in the caption, and Instagram users responded in droves as one wrote: “An urban legend on this day.” [began]. These kids will be ghost hunting for years.”

“No, that’s hilarious. “They probably talked about it all night, you told them a great story,” another agreed.

Others wanted their own whistle and one asked: “I wonder if I could get one of these as a car horn…”

Kane told Newsweek He watched the footage with friends before sharing it on social media and had “no idea” it would go viral – but “it was really exciting” when it happened.

To some commenters who complained that he shouldn’t have scared the children, he clarified that he was not a grumpy old man “waving his fist in the air and screaming, ‘Get off my lawn!'” It was simply a prank.

He added that he hasn’t seen the children come back to his property since that night, but “I’m sure a new myth, legend, rumor, etc. has emerged from the neighborhood.”

And he added: “If it had been me as a child, I would have told this story a million times as an adult, especially because I had friends who confirmed my story!”
