McCarthy Says Success of Next Congress Depends on Current House: ‘Don’t Take a Vacation’ |

Former Rep. Kevin McCarthy suggested the House get to work sooner rather than later.

McCarthy appeared in America on Sunday evening to react to the results of the 2024 elections, which went in his party’s favor. When McCarthy was a congressman and speaker of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress had a majority of 222, which he predicted would be close to this next Congress, although about seven races remain to be called.

“The most important thing for the success of the next Congress is how you get this Congress done,” McCarthy advised. “The more they get done sooner before President Trump is sworn in, the less vacation they take. Don’t take any time off. Do the bills. But more importantly, finalize all funding issues this year before you leave for President Trump.”

Trump has promised to sign several executive orders after his first days in office. In addition to the brand new orders, he plans to repeal the 94 executive orders President Joe Biden signed in his first week of 2021 that reversed Trump’s immigration policies.

McCarthy resigned his seat in December 2023 and was replaced by Rep. Vince Fong (R-CA). Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) took his place as speaker.

As of Monday morning, Republican House members had successfully filled 214 seats, 218 of which were needed for a majority. The Democrats had 203 seats for themselves.
