Mercedes-AMG will build its own high-performance electric SUV to compete with Porsche

It’s been a minute since an automaker has doubled down on its investment in future electric vehicles, but now Mercedes-AMG has done just that, announcing that it’s building a standalone AMG SUV that will be fully electric and should come to market in a timely manner , to counteract the potential three-row Porsche SUV competitor that is already in the works. Here’s what we know so far.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed only limited details with a teaser graphic of the new full-size SUV, which is said to be similar in size to the current Mercedes-Benz GLS or the EQS electric SUV. AMG is currently tuning a version of the smaller, mid-size Mercedes EQE electric SUV, but this new full-size model is said to be larger and come exclusively from the old AMG side of the company.

By opting for a standalone model that is separate from Mercedes-Benz’s existing or next-generation electric vehicles (so it won’t just be an AMG-EQS), AMG should have the potential to squeeze even more power out of the big vehicle to get out, that is the goal. It’s also been described as a “groundbreaking off-roader,” so hopefully it won’t just be a straight-up street surfer. It will be the second next-generation electric vehicle based on AMG’s so-called AMG.EA vehicle platform. The first AMG.EA vehicle will be an electric four-door GT, so it’s unclear what changes will be made to make it a huge off-roader.

AMG hasn’t announced a production date for the new full-size electric SUV, but we expect the brand is likely aiming for the 2026 or 2027 model year in order to make it in time to replace the future electric Porsche Cayenne, which is in comparison something could grow to the current gas model. There will also be the Lucid Gravity, which we admit is probably not very capable off-road, and there’s also the aforementioned Lotus Eletre.
