Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers has done it again

The Pittsburgh Steelers failed to sign a true star at the wide receiver position before the trade deadline, but there are still plenty of reasons to be optimistic about what Mike Williams will bring.

On FS1 The facilityFormer NFL receiver James Jones praised the Steelers’ move to Williams, stating that his style of play fit seamlessly into the team’s offense.

“Yeah, for me it’s very, very simple,” Jones said. “Mike Tomlin has done it again. Number one, get Mike. Mike is probably one of the best 50-50 pass catchers we’ve ever seen over the last three or four years. He’s an 80-20 guy. Understand.” Russell Wilson. What is Russell Wilson great at? [Williams] with George [Pickens]that will be a problem.

As Jones pointed out, over the course of his eight-year career, Williams has made a name for himself almost entirely on his contested catching and jump-ball skills. The 30-year-old has never been the most athletic player in the world or separated more than average, but he’s never had to excel in those areas of the game to be effective.

Williams brings career totals of 321 catches, 4,972 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns to Pittsburgh, almost all of them as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017 to 2023.

The former No. 7 overall pick and Clemson product signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets last offseason worth $10 million, despite recording just 12 catches and 166 yards in nine contests with the team.

New York therefore deemed him expendable and sent him to the Steelers for the 2025 fifth round pick.

Now Williams should take on a major role for Pittsburgh almost immediately, as he is likely the team’s second-best receiver opposite Picken. After his first practice at the Black and Gold Stadium, he spoke at length about his excitement at the opportunity to play alongside him and Wilson, and it shouldn’t be long before he starts performing.
