Mississippi Valley State University football player dies in car accident

ITTA BENA, Miss. (WLBT) – Mississippi Valley State University announced a student died in a car accident Friday.

Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers tells WLBT 3 On Your Side the vehicle was involved in a chase with Flora police.

According to the coroner’s office, the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol took control as the car crossed the Big Black River in Yazoo County.

According to MHP’s Bailey Martin, the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office participated in the pursuit; However, all agencies were canceled.

Martin says MHP called off the pursuit because they lost sight of the vehicle.

Shortly afterward, Martin said, Yazoo City police received a call about an accident that ended in a yard on Talbert Drive.

According to Shivers, the driver of the vehicle lost control and went off the road through a ditch.

The car crashed into a parked vehicle on the adjacent street, flew into the air, destroyed a light pole and rolled over several times.

According to Coroner Shivers, the teeth of life were used to get the driver out. He was flown by helicopter to UMMC. His condition is currently unknown.

The passenger, Ryan Quinney, died at the scene.

According to MVSU’s website, Quinney was a junior from Mobile, Alabama, and also played for the school’s football team.

The university’s Facebook post said: “Ryan was a bright light in our community with an attitude that uplifted everyone around him. “He will be sorely missed by his friends, faculty and all who knew him.”
