Northville precinct closed due to gas leak

NORTHVILLE – Voting has been temporarily suspended in one of the city’s two voting precincts due to a gas leak.

Crews working at the Old Village School playground struck a gas line and released fumes, prompting an evacuation of the community center at 303 W. Main St., where District No. 1 is located, Northville Mayor Brian Turnbull said .

The school was also evacuated, Turnbull said, noting that Consumers Energy was on site and there was no danger to the public.

City staff moved the ballot box and other necessary equipment to City Precinct No. 2 at Hillside Middle School, 775 N. Center St., with a police escort ensuring the safety of the materials.

Turnbull stressed the importance of protecting the ballot box during the transition.

“I know they moved the ballot box with a police escort because it is a very sacred thing,” he said. “No one can mess with this ballot box.”

Voting resumed shortly after 1 p.m., the city said on its Facebook page, with both precincts operating out of Hillside Middle School.
