Patrick County deputy breaks collarbone in argument with suspect

PATRICK COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A Stuart man is in custody after an altercation with a Patrick County sheriff’s deputy, according to the sheriff’s office.

Michael Paul McAdams, 29, was arrested early Friday morning and charged with violent obstruction of justice, assault on a law enforcement officer, destruction of property and interference with the property rights of others, according to Sheriff Dan Smith.

The incident began at 6:05 a.m. when officers received a call about a suspicious man outside the caller’s home on Spring Road in Patrick Springs. Sheriff Smith says Senior Deputy Noah Wolfe allegedly caught McAdams trying to force his way into the home’s basement. Wolfe attempted to take McAdams into custody, at which point McAdams allegedly resisted and the two argued.

Wolfe broke his collarbone during the fight when he and McAdams fell to the ground. Wolfe was still able to pin McAdams to the ground during the struggle, Smith says, until Senior Deputy Doug Perry arrived and handcuffed the suspect.

Wolfe was treated at SOVAH Hospital in Martinsville and released. According to Sheriff Smith, Wolfe will have a recovery time of at least 6 to 8 weeks.

“At this point we are hopeful that surgery can be avoided and are grateful it hasn’t gotten worse. “Unfortunately, officers are killed in similar scenarios across our country on a weekly basis,” Smith said.

McAdams is being held without bail in the Patrick County Jail.
