Penn State police are investigating the incident involving Jason Kelce, a fan who made a homophobic slur

Penn State police are investigating the incident in which Jason Kelce smashed a fan’s phone before the Nittany Lions’ game against Ohio State on Saturday, a spokesman told The Associated Press.

Kelce was on his way to the stadium when a fan asked him how it felt that his brother Travis was “doomed” to date Taylor Swift.

Kelce then turned around, grabbed the fan’s phone and threw it onto the street.

Afterwards, Kelce approached the fan several times and said, “Who’s the devil now?”

The police incident log includes an entry recorded on Saturday in which an “officer observed a visitor damaging personal property.”

PSU public information officer Jacqueline Sheader confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday that the incident involved Kelce and said the process was ongoing. Potential crimes listed in the report were criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Kelce appeared to regret his actions during his appearance on ESPN Monday before “Monday Night Football,” where Travis’ Chiefs played the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a Super Bowl LV rematch.

“Listen, I think everyone on social media saw everything that happened this week,” Kelce began. “Look, I’m not happy with anything that happened. I’m not proud of it, and in a heated moment I decided to answer hate with hate, and I just don’t think that’s a productive thing to do. I really don’t think it creates a discourse and that it’s the right way to approach things. At that moment I fell into a moment I shouldn’t have.

“So, I think the bottom line is that I try to live my life by the golden rule – that’s what I’ve always been taught. I try to treat people with decency and respect, and I will continue to do that.” Moving forward, even though I fell short this week, that’s what I will do in the future and will continue to do that.

Despite Kelce’s actions, many on social media stood up for him. Instead, they found a problem with what the Penn State fan said, not with the phone being smashed.

Jason Kelce has been emotional in the past when defending his brother, and so have those who criticized the Chiefs tight end for his slow start to the season — on Monday he posted a career-high 14 catches for 100 yards.
