PG&E shuts off power in 17 counties to prevent wildfires. Recovery is expected on Thursday

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) initiated its Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) on Tuesday, forcing the company to shut off power to 17 counties and 4 tribal areas.

Butte, Tehama, Glenn, Colusa and Plumas counties were all added to the list of areas without power. The event mainly takes place in rural areas with a risk of fire.

Places with a lot of forest, vegetation and land are at risk, and as experts review weather conditions, certain forecasts consider it safer to shut down power lines as this could start a wildfire.

About 22,000 customers are without power Wednesday but are able to access one of the many resource centers PG&E has set up across California.

Every county should have a local community resource center where they have access to WiFi, blankets, snacks, water and other essentials. They can even charge their electronics and ask questions about the power outage plans in their area.

Paul Moreno, a spokesman for the company, said power should be restored by Thursday evening. While this news anticipates relief for customers, the company reminds everyone that it will vary in each county and some may receive power quicker than others.
