Police closure of I-10 near Tucson is linked to late-night shootings in Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – Authorities in Arizona are responding to three separate scenes related to a double shooting overnight in Phoenix that is leading to the closure of Interstate 10 in southern Arizona.

Phoenix police responded to two people with gunshot wounds just before 2 a.m. near 27th Avenue and McDowell Road, according to a lieutenant on the scene.

Police determined the man and woman were initially shot at a home near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road. They attempted to drive themselves to the hospital but eventually stopped near 29th Avenue and McDowell Road to call 911.

The suspect fled the scene south on I-10, where troopers and Arizona Department of Public Safety officers followed him into the Marana area, which is north of Tucson.

Police said he was barricaded in a vehicle with a gun.

The barricade situation prompted authorities to close I-10 in both directions near Cortaro Road. It is unknown when the highway will reopen.
