Police officer and suspected shooter hit in San Diego shooting

A Harbor Police officer was injured in a shooting in Little Italy on Wednesday morning as officers searched for a gunman who had recently shot two people – one fatally – less than a mile away.

The officer and the shooter were both taken to hospitals in Hillcrest, Lt. Daniel Meyer of the San Diego Police Department. He had no information about the condition of the officer or the suspect.

Shortly after 8:20 a.m., police responded to a shooting at the corner of West A Street and Union Street, police officials said. When officers arrived, they discovered that a man and a woman had been shot. One of them was dead.

Washington Elementary School on State Street in Little Italy was placed on lockdown as officers fanned out to search for a shooter.

About 45 minutes later, Harbor Police, who participated in the search, spotted a person matching the suspect’s description, Meyer said.

The shooter and several police officers opened fire, Meyer said. One officer was shot at least once.

According to police radio traffic, the suspect was “down” and a gun was seen near the subject’s left hand.

According to the scanner, shots were detected in a building on Kettner Boulevard near Juniper Street, but no one there was injured.
