Progressive duo in crime-ridden Oakland fired after crucial election

Two California progressives were recalled after crime-plagued city residents had enough.

Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao were successfully recalled by voters in Tuesday’s election, according to KTVU.

Nearly 65 percent of voters wanted to oust Thao as mayor, blaming her for Oakland’s decline through crime. Just as many wanted to get Price out of office.

Thao gracefully resigned and wrote a concession note on of my life.

“I am deeply proud of the progress we have made together and I am committed to ensuring we stay on the right track by supporting a smooth transition.”

According to KTVU, Thao was the first mayor to be recalled in Oakland in more than 100 years.

Price has not commented on her recall. According to the local outlet, she is the first prosecutor in the county’s history to be removed.

According to KTVU, the former mayor’s critics blamed her primarily for Oakland’s high crime rate and for missing out on millions in a city retail theft grant after she missed the deadline.

They also didn’t approve of her firing a popular police chief.

“We have joined the residents of Oakland in calling for the recall of Mayor Sheng Thao for her defunding of the police department and her gross financial mismanagement that has nearly bankrupted Oakland,” said the president of the Oakland Police Officers Association Sgty. Huy Nguyen said in a statement, according to KTVU.

However, Thao blamed previous governments for her difficulties and presented her with a host of problems to solve when she took office.

She also noted that crime was declining under her authority and promised before the election that Oakland would face “instability” without her.

In the meantime, Oakland City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas will serve as interim until a special election, which must take place 120 days after the vacancy.

As for Price, she was the first prosecutor in county history to be removed.

When she was elected in 2022, she embraced a progressive platform and promised not to overindulge criminals, particularly black and brown youth.

Critics said she didn’t impose harsh enough punishments, which led to an unsafe community, KTVU reported.

She is expected to be replaced by Assistant District Attorney Royl Roberts. An interim prosecutor will be appointed later and will serve until the next general election in 2026, the outlet said.
