Promotions abound as the Phillies make personnel changes

We haven’t seen or heard much from Sam Fuld, the team’s general manager, in a while. Of course, he was never the face of the front office, with Dave Dombrowski being the ultimate decision-maker, but now we know why we didn’t hear much from Fuld.

Fuld will complete his master’s degree at the Wharton School with the idea that he will be responsible for the team’s business operations after he graduates in 2026. This means the team is moving Preston Mattingly from his spot to the GM spot, a player personnel director position he has held for some time. Luke Murton will now take over Mattingly’s old position.

It’s an interesting move for the team, but could indicate that Mattingly has been sniffed by other teams. Maybe this is their way of stopping someone from poaching him? We don’t have this knowledge, but the logic is there.

There is still a clear line of decision here: Dombrowski is at the top of the food chain and Mattingly is now second in command. Whenever Dombrowski decides to move on, the team now has a succession plan in place.
