Roma and Lyon are fighting for the group lead in the Women’s Champion League and high-scoring Chelsea are playing at Celtic

Eight-time champions Lyon and Italian newcomers Roma both have perfect records heading into their Women’s Champions League clash, which marks the third round of matches this week.

While five teams – including Mancester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich – have won their opening two games, Group A is the only one with two teams on six points ahead of Lyon’s game against Roma on Wednesday.

On the other hand, newcomers Celtic, Galatasaray and Vålerenga are all hoping to get their first points in the group stage. This also applies to the Austrian team St. Pölten, although they are playing away in Spain against defending champions Barcelona.

Man City is in the lead

Manchester City will be without a star signing Vivianne Miedema when it hosts Sweden’s Hammarby on Tuesday. The 28-year-old Netherlands striker underwent further surgery on her problematic left knee last month and it is not clear when she will be able to return.

Man City tops Group D after the 2-0 win against Barcelona in the opening round and also leads the English league. Hammarby suffered a 9-0 defeat by Barcelona in the previous round and will rely on former Man City midfielder Julie Blakstad, who joined the Swedes in January.

Barcelona are trying to become the first club to win their group in all four years since the format was introduced.

Bayern is aiming for a third win

Led by Pernille Harder, the competition’s top scorer with four goals, Bayern are big favorites for their home game against Vålerenga on Tuesday as they look to stay perfect in Group C. However, the Norwegian club is on a high after defending its national title with two games left.

Arsenal travel to Turin to face Juventus after both teams lost to Bayern and beat Vålerenga. The London club, led by interim coach Renée Slegers, received a boost in the English league with a 5-0 win over Brighton, while Juventus dominated their domestic competition under new coach Max Canzi.

Top spot at stake

Roma will be hoping to learn a lesson from last year ahead of their battle for the top spot in Group A against Lyon. The Italian club were leading their group at the time, but ended up finishing last. Lyon lost the final against Barcelona last season and have yet to concede a goal this season.

Galatasaray needs to recover a 6-1 defeat against Roma in Istanbul in the preliminary round. The Turkish club faces two-time champions Wolfsburg.

Chelsea with the highest points

Chelsea travel to Celtic on Wednesday hoping to continue their winning ways under new coach Sonia Bompastor. Chelsea secured a 3-0 away win over Liverpool in the league, making it their sixth win in a row. The London club have scored a total of 23 goals in the league, scoring three in both wins against Real Madrid and Twente in Group B. Real beat Celtic 4-0 in their previous game to secure their first points in the group and face a young player Next up is the Twente squad.
