Setback in Mainz: Red and bankruptcy for Borussia Dortmund

As of: November 9, 2024 5:22 p.m

Borussia Dortmund deservedly lost 1:3 (1:2) to 1. FSV Mainz 05 after being long outnumbered. The hosts took advantage of BVB captain Emre Can’s early red card (27th minute, serious foul) and the resulting excess numbers. Jae-sung Lee (36th), Jonathan Burkardt (45th + 3) and Paul Nebel (54th) scored the victory, Serhou Guirassy (40th, penalty) scored to make it 1-1.

This marked the next setback for Dortmund in what has so far been a disappointing season. The most recent victories against Leipzig and Graz had raised hopes of an upswing, but now the gap to first place has increased to ten points.

Mainz, on the other hand, ended a series of four games without a win and celebrated their first home win at the sixth attempt. In the table, FSV moved within three points of Dortmund.

Can be with open sole

The tense personnel situation at BVB had only eased slightly before the party. Julian Ryerson returned to the starting line-up for the suspended left-back Ramy Bensebaini, and Yan Couto was at least back in the squad. However, Waldemar Anton and Niklas Süle were still missing in central defense, so Can again had to help out centrally in the defensive line.

He shone there against Graz, but against Mainz he weakened his team with a bad tackle. In his own penalty area he hit Mainz’s Jae-sung Lee with an open sole and was shown red. The only right decision – Can probably also saw it that way. He refrained from making protest gestures and apologized to Lee.

BVB coach Nuri Sahin then pulled Felix Nmecha back into the back four, but less than ten minutes later Dortmund were already behind. Lee headed Anthony Caci’s cross over the line from close range.

Shortly afterwards, Lee was back at the center of the action. He lost the ball in his own half and then clumsily fouled Guirassy in his own penalty area. The BVB attacker took the penalty himself and scored safely to make it 1-1.

Impact hit before the break

Shortly before the break, Mainz scored another effective goal. A nice attack on the right side ended with a precise cross from Danny da Costa and a nice finish from new international Burkardt.

Mainz followed up early in the second half, with the 22-year-old Nebel scoring his first Bundesliga goal with a deflected shot. Afterwards, Mainz defended their lead confidently, and Dortmund hardly made any dangerous attacks when they were outnumbered.

Mainz against Kiel, Dortmund against Freiburg

Now Dortmund’s hopes rest on having more players available again after the international break. BVB welcomes SC Freiburg on matchday 11 (Saturday, November 23rd, 3:30 p.m.), and one day later Mainz plays in Kiel (Sunday, November 24th, 3:30 p.m.). .
