Sheriff’s report: Man arrested on assault charges following road rage incident

A 56-year-old man was arrested on assault charges following a road rage incident near the outlet mall.

He told officers he was “a little frustrated” and admitted to putting his hands on someone, according to a Summit County Sheriff’s Office report.

When the police arrived at the outlet shopping center, they saw a group of four people and the 56-year-old man.

The group translated for another driver who explained he was exceeding the speed limit on Kilby Road when the suspect pulled up behind him and began beeping. The driver pulled into the shopping center parking lot, where the 56-year-old man followed him.

Both parties exited their vehicles, the report said. The 56-year-old asked the other driver if he would stop in front of him and told him to watch where he was going and to be more careful.

The other driver said he didn’t speak English, to which the 56-year-old replied: “You might want to learn.” He gave a vulgar warning and returned to his vehicle.

The man backed up as if he was going to drive away, but then got out again. The other driver filmed the encounter and the 56-year-old asked why he was taking photos.

The 56-year-old then knocked the phone out of the other driver’s hand and broke it. He also punched the other driver in the ribs and knocked him to the ground, the report said. The video shows the phone being knocked away and the impact, but not the punch.

The other driver picked up the phone and recorded a video of the 56-year-old man swearing at him and leaving the scene. He returned to the area before officers arrived.

Officials arrested the 56-year-old. He was charged with assault and damaging/interrupting a communications device. He is being held in the Summit County Jail on bail.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to several additional calls between Monday, November 4th and Sunday, November 10th, including reports of driving under the influence, active warrants and speeding.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and determined that the driver had violated an ignition interlock. The person did not have valid insurance or registration and was driving with a suspended license. Officers then learned that the driver did not have permission from the registered owner to drive the vehicle. The registered owner refused to press charges and just wanted his car back. The driver was arrested on multiple charges and booked into the Summit County Jail.

A vehicle was observed entering Interstate 80 westbound from the Kimball Junction on-ramp at a high rate of speed. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper stopped the car, which was traveling between 84 and 86 miles per hour. The driver reduced his speed and continued driving for more than a mile before stopping. The driver admitted to drinking two beers and performed poorly on a standardized field sobriety test. He took a breath test that showed a blood alcohol content of 0.111, more than twice the legal limit in Utah. The man was arrested and charged with suspicion of drunk driving, speeding and not having a valid driver’s license.

A vehicle was observed traveling 5 miles per hour over the posted speed limit on Main Street in Coalville.
