Shooting at Tuskegee University homecoming: 1 dead, several people injured in chaotic scene

One person was killed on the Tuskegee University campus after dozens of shots were reportedly fired after midnight.

According to Tuskegee spokeswoman Thonnia Lee, the person killed had no connection to the university.

Several other people, including Tuskegee students, were injured and are being treated at East Alabama Medical Center and Baptist South Hospital.

Macon County Coroner Hal Bentley said “quite a few people” were injured, but he did not know an exact number of injuries. Bentley said he could not yet provide any information about the person killed.

A student was shot in the stomach, Tuskegee City Police Chief Mardis said. “I helped load them up.” A male student was shot in the arm and Mardis said he had no information about the third person injured.

Rapid gunfire can be heard in social media videos as people crouch on the ground and behind cars at the West Commons.

City police were on the scene of a double shooting in Texaco in which two people suffered minor injuries when officers learned all about the shooting at the West Commons campus apartments around 9:30 p.m., Mardis said.

“Some idiots started shooting,” Mardis said. “You couldn’t get emergency vehicles there, there were so many people there.”

Tuskegee celebrated its 100th home game on Saturday.

Emergency responders, along with campus and local law enforcement, secured the scene. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is conducting an active investigation.

Lee said the university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents.

No one was in custody and it was not immediately clear what led to the shooting, Mardis said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.

“It’s terrible,” said Mardis, the former campus police chief.

“When I was there I was always nervous. You see it happening everywhere. It happened everywhere but us.”
