South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has reportedly been chosen by Trump to be Secretary of Homeland Security

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, sources confirmed to CNN.

Trump’s decision to choose Noem appears to be in line with his promise to crack down on illegal immigration after he added Stephen Miller to his Cabinet as deputy chief of staff for policy and Tom Homan as border czar on Monday.

The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for border protection, immigration disaster response and US intelligence, among other things.

Noem, once considered a possible Trump candidate, faced widespread backlash in April when she wrote in her memoir about shooting and killing an “untrainable” dog.

She wrote that she told the story to show her willingness to do anything “difficult, messy and ugly” if necessary.

In May, Noem was banned from additional tribal lands in South Dakota for comments she made earlier this year about tribal leaders profiting from drug cartels.

She publicly alleged that tribal leaders were catering to drug cartels on their reservations while neglecting the needs of children and the poor.

The governor is currently serving her second four-year term after being re-elected in 2022.
