STATEMENT: We are here and ready to fight – A Better Balances pledges to fight to protect workers and families under the Trump administration

The following is a statement from A Better Balance President Inimai Chettiar:

“We know so many are outraged, devastated and afraid about what the 2024 election results mean for families and communities across the country. We’ve been down this road before, and for many there was no reprieve. We know that the coming years will bring new threats and legal challenges that undermine justice and democracy.

A Better Balance is here and ready to fight for legal protections for workers every day. We know the playbook and are prepared– especially in the South, where we never stopped fighting in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

We stand ready to mobilize to continue to vigorously enforce and defend the groundbreaking Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and the PUMP Act, which remain important sources of protection for women and all pregnant and postpartum people. With your support, we stand ready to do whatever it takes to protect the laws we fought so hard to pass and which serve as part of a vital safety net for workers across the country.

We stand ready to fight for the rights of immigrants and the transgender community who have been attacked with hateful rhetoric during this election cycle.

We stand ready to work with our reproductive justice partners to defend access to abortion and life-saving reproductive care.

We stand ready to provide direct legal assistance to women and all workers through our free hotline when lack of federal enforcement results in employer violations of important labor laws. This work becomes even more important as workers, particularly marginalized populations, are unlikely to feel comfortable turning to the federal government to enforce their rights.

We will never give up advocating for paid family and medical leave, paid sick days, and other important workplace protections at both the state and federal levels.

Yesterday we saw a glimmer of hope for paid leave: Nebraska, Missouri and Alaska each voted overwhelmingly across party lines to pass state-level paid sick leave laws. A Better Balance has helped draft and advance these laws with our local partners, and we will now work hard to ensure their implementation. We will continue to work in states across the country to pass leave, accommodations, and other work and family laws that we know have broad bipartisan support, regardless of who is in office.

We reaffirm our commitment to continue to advance and defend economic justice, racial justice, gender justice, disability justice and LGBTQ justice through new policymaking and in the courts.
