Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 6 Review – FIGHT!!!!

After last week’s very Luthor-focused episode, it would be interesting to see how Lex would move on from the loss of his doomsday safety net and attempt to complete his “revenge summer camp.” As my review of season 4 and episode 6 of “Superman & Lois” will show, things went in surprising directions and resulted in by far the best episode of the season.

The crux of the latest episode was Luthor taking the next step in his plan, which was to acquire the land in Smallville so he could build the new Lexcorp headquarters there. Although we somewhat knew this was what he intended to do, it was nice to hear him say it out loud along with others and see the steps to achieve it. However, the only reason the plot worked was because we witnessed the resistance of Lana, Lois, Clark, and others in Smallville.

I’ve basically said from day one that Lana Lang was one of the best characters in Superman & Lois, and the budget cuts that have reduced her characters’ appearances this season are noticeable. So when she stood up to Luthor several times and even got Clark to help her help an important pawn (who knew Clark’s secret) stop Luthor’s plan, I really feared for her life. After all, he killed Sam Lane and Clark and was willing to ruin others to get his way. So why not Lana?

In fact, he was targeting her, but thanks to Sarah, she survived. The raw emotions of both this scene and the scenes that followed were handled perfectly except for one or two nitpicks. Everyone felt it, and even though Lana and Sarah were okay in the end, you knew that everyone was NOT okay.

The fight scene between Lex and Clark was certainly something unexpected, especially given the “red rays of the sun.” Again it was very raw and emotional. One might fear Clark’s anger when he referred to Luthor as himself and not Superman. Then, when the fight took place, you enjoyed the real back and forth that could only have happened under those conditions. I was also glad that Clark won because it would have been unbelievable if Luthor had won since he doesn’t really get his hands dirty with his opponents. Well, not yet anyway.

When I look back at the smaller moments that made me smile, it was honestly kind of adorable to see Clark struggle with suddenly getting older. The Salt and Pepper scenes with Lois were fun and they continue to shine on screen as a couple. Seriously, good luck topping them soon. I appreciated that Clark saw things from all sides (including “Superman is going gray”), while Lois saw it more as a sign that this could be a blessing since they could “age gracefully together.” Keep in mind that in the comics, Superman doesn’t age like we do in multiple continuities, so this is honestly a fair response to “suddenly turn gray.” The “God among us” is suddenly more human than he ever realized, and that shocks him. This is an action I can support.

Just like I get a behind-the-scenes look at Luthor trying to intimidate the people of Smallville and them rallying behind Lana and Clark. Sure, one of them knew he was Superman, but that also speaks to Superman’s character and personality. He wouldn’t just say: “Someone is bad.” He has often demonstrated his good will and good nature. Based on next week’s preview of Superman trying to “put the genie back in the bottle,” I’m actually a little scared, but we’ll see how it goes.

Unfortunately, I would like to continue this Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 6 review without any negatives, but there were a few “bumps” along the way that were hard to ignore.

Above all, the “Super Sons”. Jonathan is racing around the world saving everyone he can and it’s sudden, and just as suddenly he learns to “slow down” at the end of the episode. Then, with Jordan, he’s still struggling with his “I’m making everything worse” phase, only to realize that “if I don’t do something, it’ll make everything worse.” That’s not how it works. He was going through a mental health crisis, which Jonathan makes fun of in this episode, and then he’s like, “No, I’ll just get over it.” That’s not how it works! Plus, it’s silly to blame yourself for what happened to Lana because even Clark doesn’t always listen to everyone; That’s why he uses the communicator on Lois, Sam and so on.

As for Sarah, while I did notice her defending her mother and then telling Lana not to stop, the plot of “Study Aboard” should have been a whole arc, not a single episode. Plus, they don’t even explain how Lana and Sarah will be able to afford it, or if she’ll even be able to do it completely. I admire that she wants to “spread her wings,” but according to her, there is a limit to that. It’s another example of “writing someone off” so that we don’t think about them in future stories when they’re not there. I hate what these budget cuts did to the final season, and I fear what might happen next with certain characters.

Finally, while I was really looking forward to the fight between Lex and Clark, did Lex get those red lights and then install them all over the street without ANYONE noticing? Really? I don’t buy that.

Ultimately, my Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 6 review will end with the highest score this season has had so far (I double-checked to make sure that’s the case!). There was good tension building and setbacks on multiple fronts, great drama and so on. If the final four episodes can maintain this level of quality, it could truly be a legendary ending.
