Tennessee man finds huge anthill

play

We’ve all been told not to make mountains out of molehills, but no one has ever said anything about anthills.

Corey Turner found a giant anthill in a park in Jackson, Tennessee, where he often walks.

“…Honestly, I [had] I saw others that day that were smaller until I came across this one. It just stood out from the rest, so I had to video it. It was a perfectly formed, dome-like hill. “It was just amazing to see ants build something of that scope and size,” Turner told Storyful, a channel that shows viral videos and shared Turner’s video on YouTube.

How big do anthills get?

According to AntKeepers, Formica ants typically form the largest anthills, which can grow up to 8.2 feet tall. Anthills tend to be much smaller than 8 feet because most don’t have enough time to grow that big.

The University of Illinois states that anthills are most commonly seen as a hole in the ground about 1/4 inch in diameter with a surrounding layer of soil 2 to 3 inches in diameter.

What are anthills made of?

Anthills are made of fine sand, soil, clay and twigs. They do not use stones, gravel, or rocks because these substances are too heavy for ants to carry and do not decompose easily.

Should you tear down anthills?

It’s entirely up to you whether you want to knock it down or not. Most people tend to remove anthills that appear in their lawns or yards. So if you see one in the park, there are no rules saying you should or shouldn’t remove it because most ants are not an invasive species.

Fire ants are an invasive species and their anthills should be destroyed if possible. Destroy all anthills containing reddish-brown ants between 1/8 and 1/4 inch in size.
