Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers named a semifinalist for the Major Award

Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers has had ups and downs so far this season.

But now he seems to be on the right track.

On Tuesday, Ewers was named a semifinalist along with 15 other players for the Maxwell Award Collegiate Player of the Year, which goes to the country’s most outstanding player. Later that day, he was also named a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, which goes to the best quarterback in the country.

Ewers is the first Longhorn semifinalist for the award since former Bijan Robinson in 2022 and hopes to become the first winner of the award for Texas since Colt McCoy in 2009. Should Ewers actually win the award, he would join Tommy Nobis (1965). Ricky Williams (1998), Vince Young (2005) and McCoy as the only winners in school history.

Earlier this week, Ewers was also named to the Davey O’Brien and East-West Shrine Bowl Monday Morning Quarterback for his performance against Florida.

In that game, Ewers completed 19 of 27 passes for a season-high 333 yards and five touchdown passes, the most of his career, leading the Longhorns to a 49-17 home win.

“I thought Quinn played fantastic today and I thought he played great two weeks ago against Vanderbilt. He was a little unlucky with some top balls, but today he was back on point. Unfortunately, we had a few drops.” He really ran the offense, even if it was just throwing the ball. That’s right, guys, they were on time. They were able to catch the balls, so I think he goes into this game with real confidence.

That performance followed one of his best outings of the season two weeks ago against Vanderbilt. Previously, Ewers had struggled in his last two starts against Oklahoma and Georgia and was substituted once against the Bulldogs in favor of Arch Manning.

However, he has since rebounded by posting two of his better performances in consecutive weeks and leading the Longhorns to two SEC wins.

And it seems this is giving him his swagger back.

“It definitely adds a lot to confidence,” Ewers said. “After that performance from the entire offense, who wouldn’t be confident to go out there and perform the way we did overall?”

This season, Ewers has completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 1,722 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions.
