In a joint statement Saturday evening, the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Customs and Immigration Union said a border officer “took his own life on the job” in Windsor.

“PSAC and the Customs and Immigration Union are aware of the tragic incident,” the statement said. “Incidents like this bring to light the challenges that public safety personnel can face throughout their careers.

“They remind us of the need for a comprehensive mental health support structure and the importance of breaking down barriers to accessing these services, both in professional and personal settings.”

Officers and a forensic examination vehicle were stationed around the secondary inspection area, which was cordoned off with yellow police tape, from approximately 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m

Shortly after 3 p.m., the Detroit to Windsor bridge lanes reopened.

“We are very saddened by the death today of a CBSA employee working on the Ambassador Bridge,” said CBSA spokesperson Karine Martel told the Windsor Star. “Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the family, friends and colleagues of a distinguished member of the CBSA community who worked in the Southern Ontario region.

“Out of respect for the relatives, no further information will be shared.”

CBSA employees seeking assistance are asked to contact the Employee Assistance Program at 1-877-367-0809. For confidential assistance, individuals may contact 1-877-338-0275.

Traffic to the United States was not affected by the investigation.
