The announcers were in disbelief at Rob Dillingham’s standing ovation

The NBA released Election Night on Tuesday, but one of the funniest moments of the season occurred the previous Monday night. But to hear it, you had to listen to the Charlotte Hornets broadcast in the final minutes of a crushing loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves to hear the announcers’ reaction when rookie Rob Dillingham entered the game.

Of course, if you were watching at this point, you would have to be a true Hornets fan or a bet would still be on the line. Or maybe you just wanted to see if Eric Collins would say something entertaining like he’s known to say. Luckily that happened.

A few minutes before the end, Dillingham came into the game. It was only his second appearance for the Timberwolves this season, as the franchise appears to be taking things slow with the 8th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. But when he took the floor, Dillingham received a rousing standing ovation from the home crowd in Minneapolis – one that Collins simply couldn’t believe.

“What the hell did he ever do…really? Good God! He’s played before?! “He actually played in a game but didn’t score,” Collins said in amazement.

The simultaneously disbelieving and amused reaction is hilarious as he literally can’t imagine why Rob Dillingham is being celebrated like Michael Jordan in his post-retirement comeback. But hey, God bless the Minnesota Timberwolves fans for cheering and supporting their rookie so passionately. Dillingham even rewarded them with the first points of his NBA career.

And when Rob Dillingham ends up being an All-NBA selection and inducted into the Hall of Fame, we can all look back on this clip as the bulletin board material that started it all.
