The cold front will bring wintry conditions tonight

After a mild start today with temperatures nearly 10°C above normal, a cold front tonight brings the chance of some snowflakes and colder temperatures tomorrow morning. Temperatures could drop to as low as 20°C by early Wednesday morning.

The cold front is expected to move through after sunset this evening, bringing scattered showers across central New York as the night begins. Behind the front the winds become more northwesterly. This will blow cold air across Lake Ontario and send lake-effect rain and snow showers toward the southern hills, Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region.

While the Syracuse area will likely remain mostly dry, up to an inch of snow accumulation is possible on cold surfaces where the strongest lake effect band forms tomorrow morning.

The strong breeze is expected to continue to strengthen overnight today, with winds around 10-25 mph and gusts around 35 mph. These windy conditions, coupled with temperatures in the 30s, could result in wind chill temperatures – what it actually feels like – into the 20s early in the morning.

The snow should be gone by midday and the sun should return by late afternoon, but temperatures will be above 30°C for most of the day, with the high only reaching around 40°C. By the end of the week, temperatures should warm back up into the 50s.
