The Cubs say goodbye to Kyle Hendricks in free agency as he signs with the Angels

SAN ANTONIO – When Cubs fans flocked to Wrigley Field in late September to give right-hander Kyle Hendricks a fairytale sendoff, the expectation was that he would end up with another team in free agency. Those suspicions became reality on Wednesday when he reportedly signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Angels.

The California native accepted an early offer and landed with a team that was looking for young pitchers where his leadership skills could add value even beyond his own performance. In his 11-year major league career, Hendricks only pitched for the Cubs.

He was the last player remaining from the 2016 World Series champion Cubs. His legacies include the 2016 National League ERA title and an impressive postseason record highlighted by 7⅓ scoreless innings in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series against the Dodgers and winning the pennant.

Built on a devastating rotation and elite command, “The Professor” became known for his steady demeanor and impact in the clubhouse. In recent seasons he has struggled with a long-term shoulder injury and his consistency has fluctuated. But he also proved to be adaptable.

“I hope there’s just a chance for someone,” Hendricks said at the end of the season. “Whoever it is, I’m just looking forward to taking full advantage of it. You never know, things could come full circle. You could switch between different teams and come back at any time. The door is never closed.”

Even if Hendricks ends his playing career, the Cubs would jump at the chance to bring him back in another capacity.
