The DeKalb neighborhood fears an escalation in crime following a robbery of a mail carrier and a car break-in

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A DeKalb County neighborhood is pleading with police and the U.S. Postal Service to intervene after a mail carrier was robbed, mail was repeatedly stolen and a car was broken into at the same address.

“So I go to the car, you know, and I see glass everywhere and I’m like, ‘They broke my window,'” Jessyca Arnold said.

Arnold parked a rental car at a friend’s house in Wyndham Falls Estates overnight Saturday and returned to find the back window broken. Her friend’s surveillance camera filmed the break-in.

“I could see them running away from the scene – it wasn’t worth trying to catch them,” Arnold said.

What Arnold didn’t know before parking: At the same spot where her car was, a mail carrier told Atlanta News First’s Madeline Montgomery that her master key to the mail kiosk was stolen. She was afraid to go on camera, but says the area has worried her for some time.

The same camera that recorded the break-in filmed two men of similar build walking from the same direction, breaking into the kiosk and returning with stolen packages.

“Basically it’s two guys terrorizing a community and that’s just not right,” Arnold said.

“I was driving by on Sunday and saw the doors swing open and didn’t think anything of it, but later my mom told me the mailboxes had been broken into,” said Brittney, who lives in Wyndham Falls Estates.

Neighbors have contacted the US Postal Service (USPS) to change the locks and asked police to patrol the neighborhood.

“Your back, your package is back, your car, you have to watch everything at this point,” Brittney said.

A USPS spokesman said they were investigating the situation but could not provide further details because it was Veterans Day.

DeKalb County police say they are investigating but can’t say much because it’s a USPS matter. They did not respond to an Atlanta News First inquiry about the car break-in. An Atlanta News First team actually saw a DeKalb patrol vehicle drive past the mail kiosk after neighbors told them they had reported a suspicious car that they believed was involved in mail theft.
