The Deputy Secretary of Defense recognizes veterans’ contributions to national security in his Veterans Day message

This week, in an address marking Veterans Day, Assistant Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks honored America’s veterans and emphasized the profound impact their service has on the enduring freedoms of all Americans.

Hicks emphasized the invaluable role veterans have played in ensuring the country’s security and preserving democracy.

“Every Veterans Day, as a nation, we take a moment to recognize the enduring contributions of America’s veterans,” Hicks said. “Thanks to the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, they have made it possible for all of us to enjoy the freedoms we have today and for future generations.”

The Deputy Minister further expressed the Ministry of Defense’s gratitude to the veterans for their tireless commitment to national security. “To all of our veterans, past and present, our nation is forever grateful for your service,” she continued. “Thank you for all you have done to deter aggression, protect our democracy and ensure our national security.”

Veterans Day, celebrated annually on November 11, has deep historical significance and dates back to the end of the First World War. On November 11, 1918, the signing of an armistice marked the end of hostilities and the day became known as Armistice Day. A year later, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day to commemorate peace and honor those who had sacrificed in service to the country.

The holiday grew in scope and importance, and in 1954, Congress renamed the holiday “Veterans Day” to honor all veterans who served in the armed forces. Hicks took the time to recognize this legacy and connect it to the ongoing work of the Department of Defense and the current generation of service members who are following in veterans’ footsteps.

Hicks’ comments underscored the alignment between the Defense Department’s mission and the sacrifices of veterans. She expressed her pride in the collective achievements and contributions of all the helpers. Hicks praised the veterans for their courage and resilience and recognized their sacrifices as the cornerstone of America’s defense.
