“Together with our Supercell partners, we have created the first true crime story in the game,” André Toledo, CCO of David New York, said in a statement. He called Hammerless “A four-episode podcast that follows the mystery of who stole the hammer from the village and invites the community to share their theories to help recover the hammer and save Hammer Jam.”

The online true crime community has launched stars like MrBallen and Bailey Sarian, while also contributing views to some of the most viewed sponsored videos on YouTube. By embracing an exploding trend, Supercell continues its forward-thinking approach to gaming marketing. Like many mobile game publishers, it has embraced innovative formats to achieve strong viewership on platforms like YouTube.

Some members of the true crime community may bristle at this Hammerless campaign because it comes at a time when the authors are prioritizing victim advocacy over more entertaining aspects of the true crime field. Still, there’s room for a little fun in true crime – but Supercell’s fictional account could spawn a whole new genre.
