The Lions QB throws a career-high 5 INTs in the win against the Texans

play

Jared Goff was close to changing his name to “Jared Goof” against the Texans on “Sunday Night Football” until he didn’t.

In typical Lions fashion, the team staged an unlikely comeback in a highly entertaining Week 10 contest in Houston. While Goff was definitely part of the problem, he made sure he was part of the solution. The team erased a 16-point halftime deficit by shutting out the Texans in the second half, winning 26-23 and improving to 8-1 on the season.

Goff threw three interceptions in the first half, added two in the final 30 minutes, and had a few close calls along the way. Still, the resilient Goff managed to lead his team to victory when it mattered most. It was an uneven performance that won’t win any awards anytime soon, but it’s one the quarterback won’t soon forget either.

Detroit became the first team since the Colts in 1970 to win after erasing a deficit of at least 15 points with five or more interceptions. However, the story doesn’t stop there. While Goff probably won’t be pleased with throwing a personal-high five interceptions in a single game, he became the first quarterback to score that many INTs since Matt Ryan led the Falcons to a 23-19 mark on November 18th victory over the Cardinals, 2012.

Here’s a breakdown of Goff’s historic day.

Jared Goff stats vs. Texans

Here’s a look at Goff’s stats from the Lions’ wild 26-23 comeback win over the Texans:

  • Completions/Attempts (%): 15/30 (50.0%)
  • Farms passing by: 240
  • Passing TDs:2
  • Interception: 5
  • Passerby rating: 59.7

While Goff has played some clunkers throughout his career, his performance against the Texans since arriving in Detroit has been the exception rather than the rule. With three interceptions in the first half, Goff’s stats represented a stark contrast to a player who has been on a roll of late.

With only 50 percent of his passes, the Lions’ signal caller delivered by far his worst game of the season. He completed at least 70 percent of passes in each of the last six games, including the game in which he didn’t throw an incompletion on September 30 against the Seahawks.

Although Goff set a career high for the most interceptions thrown in a game, it still wasn’t enough to send the Lions home winless. When it mattered most, Detroit’s quarterback put the team within field goal range and gave kicker Jake Bates a chance to win the game.

Bates drained the field goal, improving the Lions’ record to 8-1 and successfully changing the story on Goff’s night. Rather than raising questions about a sudden turnover problem after a poor performance, it’s a story of triumph and resilience of a team that just doesn’t give up.

As the saying goes, winning settles everything.

Most interceptions by Jared Goff in a game

Goff set a career high for most interceptions in a game against the Texans on November 10, 2024. He threw five interceptions to the Houston defense and flirted with a few more throughout the game, but surpassed his previous high of four on December 9, 2018 as a member of the Rams.

NFL record for most interceptions in a game

The record for most interceptions in a game belongs to Jim Hardy. The Chicago Cardinals quarterback managed to throw eight of them to the Philadelphia Eagles on September 24, 1950. Hardy’s team lost the game 45-7 as Hardy only completed 12 passes in the opening game of Week 1. As the story goes, the Chicago Cardinals later traveled to St. Louis before eventually landing in Arizona and forming the franchise as we know it today.

For most interceptions in a game in the 21st century, that honor belongs to Ty Detmer, who scored seven for the Detroit Lions against the Cleveland Browns on September 23, 2001.
