The New England weather forecast calls for sunny skies after the rain tapers off

A weak weather system brought limited rainfall overnight, and while anything is welcome right now, we need a lot more rain to ease drought conditions across New England. Some Boston recorded 0.1 inch of rain, while the New Haven suburb of Northford, Connecticut, recorded 0.40 inch of rain.

Other top rainfall amounts include:

South Kingstown – 0.38 inches

Mystical – 0.39 inches

Lexington – 0.31 inches

If you have planted or transplanted anything this fall, it is important to water about once a week until rainfall returns to normal.

Temperatures today are the mildest of the week and we’ll actually have some pretty cool weather on Wednesday and Thursday, when it will be below average.

High pressure builds across the region during the work week. We will feel an increasing shot of colder air on Wednesday and Thursday before a moderate trend sets in towards the end of the week.

If you’re wondering when this dry spell might finally end, there are still no reliable signs of significant rainfall. When we fall into these patterns, it can often be very difficult to break out of them. In the same way that we experienced abundant rainfall last fall and winter and it seemed like it would never stop, we have now gone to the opposite extreme.

Things have a way of balancing out and the question meteorologists will be pondering is that if there is regular rainfall we will go back to the other extreme. For now, continue to enjoy the dry weather because eventually that will change.

Southern New England: Skies clear with temperatures around 60° and a light breeze in the afternoon.

Western fair: This morning the sky is clearing and there is sunshine. Temperatures will be in the lower 60s.

Cape and Islands: Early showers will end as the afternoon clears and temperatures are in the lower 60s.

Northern New England: Any morning showers will come to an end as we clean up. Temperatures will be between 50 and almost 60 degrees.
