The new Senate majority leader was elected in an early test of Trump’s power

Republicans elected Sen. John Thune of South Dakota as Senate majority leader on Wednesday.

Thune defeated Texas Sen. John Cornyn and Florida Sen. Rick Scott to replace Sen. Mitch McConnell as GOP leader.

As of early January, Republicans are expected to have a majority in the Senate for the next two years. The Democrats currently have the majority in the chamber.
