GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers are trading veteran defensive end Preston Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a seventh-round draft choice, two sources confirmed to the Journal Sentinel.

Smith, who was in his sixth season with the Packers and his 10th in the NFL, saw less playing time this year. He has 19 tackles and 2½ sacks this year.

He had 44 sacks in his six seasons with the Packers.

His prorated base salary of $3.2 million and the remaining two years of his contract now belong to the Steelers. The Packers will gain about $2 million in cap money this year, but Smith will factor in $5 million in dead money next year against the Packers’ cap through 2025.

The Packers have given Kingsley Enagbare and 2023 first-round pick Lukas Van Ness more snaps this year, and it’s likely that second-year pro Arron Mosby, who had a half sack in the game against Detroit, and possibly second-year pro, Brenton Cox Jr., it’s time to see more snaps.

NFL Network was first to report the trade.
