The Seahawks’ signing of N’Keal Harry is likely to raise questions about John Schneider’s job

What does Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider think? Let’s dismiss any assumption that head coach Mike Macdonald is responsible for the roster changes. That’s not him. When Pete Carroll was fired as head coach this past offseason, Schneider took ultimate control of all roster decisions. Macdonald is there to coach the team. Schneider’s job is to build the squad.

Schneider has obviously made some mistakes since Carroll was fired. The team let all-time great linebacker Bobby Wagner leave in free agency and Seattle signed Tyrel Dodson and Jerome Baker to replace him. Baker has since been traded and Dodson was released Monday. The inside linebackers now will likely be Ernest Jones IV and rookie Tyrice Knight.

What’s even worse about Schneider’s personnel decisions is that the team decided on Monday to sign N’Keal Harry to the practice squad. Harry fell in the first round as a wide receiver to the New England Patriots and was so inept as a receiver that he moved to tight end. He didn’t last anywhere as far as TE either.

Since 2020, Harry has totaled 19 catches, with zero in 2023. This year he has some too because no team wanted to give him a chance to play. Sure, Harry was only included in the training squad, but he’s just taking up a spot there from a more worthy player.

The signing of Harry could mean that Noah Fant’s groin injury is worse than initially thought. In theory, Seattle needs a tight end other than Fant who can consistently catch passes when Fant can’t play. AJ Barner has been decent in that regard, but no other tight end in Seattle has shown he can do it all. The problem is that Harry didn’t do that either.

Even as a wide receiver he was bad. He can’t block. You can’t rely on him as a receiver either. What was the point of wasting a dollar on him?

Maybe John Schneider will learn that Pete Carroll made the roster decisions seem easier than they were. Schneider made a number of trades in the preseason and first half of the year, but none really worked out. That’s not the case with most of his free agent signings either. Maybe Seattle should bring Carroll back as general manager and the team should fire Schneider.
