The Tennis Channel analyst has been suspended indefinitely following hot mic comments made about the 2024 Wimbledon champion

Tennis Channel analyst Jon Wertheim has been suspended indefinitely for making “unprofessional” comments about a player during the broadcast.

It was a hot moment for Wertheim, also a “60 Minutes” correspondent, who was commentating on Barbora Krejcikova’s performance during the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Wertheim’s comments came while he was on screen during Krejcikova’s loss to Zheng Qinwen, this year’s Olympic women’s singles champion.

“Who do you think I am, Barbora Krejcikova,” Wertheim said during the television segment, thinking it would not be broadcast. “Look at their foreheads as Krejcikova and Jon enter the court.”

Krejcikova responded to Wertheim’s comments by saying it was an “unprofessional comment.”

“As an athlete dedicated to this sport, it was disappointing to see these types of unprofessional comments,” Krejcikova wrote in a social media post. “This is not the first time something like this has happened [the] Sports world. I have often chosen not to speak out, but I believe it is time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media.

“These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication that all athletes bring to the field. I really love tennis and want it to be portrayed in a way that honors our commitment to competing at this level.”

Wertheim apologized to Krejcikova on social media.

“I made some deeply regrettable comments off-air,” Wertheim said. “I recognize her. I apologize for them. I immediately reached out and apologized to the player.”

Wertheim’s apology post also included what happened from his perspective.

“During rehearsal, we were shown a graphic of a player who had just competed,” Wertheim wrote. “It showed her at an angle that exaggerated her forehead. A few moments later I was told to increase my zoom. I looked at the low camera angle and joked that it made my forehead resemble the photo of the player in question. Someone in the control room chimed in and I joked back. Although this was a private rehearsal, this exchange accidentally and without context made it into the live broadcast.

“It is clear to me: I am not the victim here. It wasn’t professional, charitable, or reflective of the person I want to be. I bear responsibility. This is mine. I’m sorry.”

Finally, Tennis Channel released a statement regarding Wertheim’s indefinite suspension.

“Jon has dedicated his career to the promotion and advancement of this sport and has been a valued member of our family and the tennis community,” the statement said. “However, Tennis Channel holds its employees to a standard of respect for others at all times, a standard that was not met at this moment.”
