There are rumors that there will be a new expansion for the Pokémon trading card game Pocket in early 2025 – but what are the chances of that actually happening?

Rumor has it that a selection of new cards will be coming to Pokemon TCG Pocket in January next year. But how legitimate are these rumors given the real hunger for major new updates to the game?

The source for this comes from a leak courtesy of Centro Leaks, a notable Pokemon leak account that has shared early news surrounding the intellectual property and hobby in the past. According to this report, January 30th will see the release of the A2 expansion, which will add a significant number of new maps to the game, in addition to new events like a Bulbasaur and a Magnemite event popping up between now and then.

As for their source, Centro Leaks points to a small account called PokemonPocket, which published this data back on October 25th. Since this is an account dedicated to a brand new game, there is little historical evidence of credibility. As for Centro Leaks itself, the account has a mixed history in terms of accuracy. It has been correct in the past, but there have also been some major bugs reported. Take this post on Indigo Disk information from 2023. It was published and later confirmed to be “fake” after the provided screenshot was discovered to have been altered on 4chan.

What makes things murky is that there is probably an element of truth to this leak. We know it’s likely that a Venusaur promo event is coming (courtesy of a datamined post from Pocket Codex). This promo event is referred to as a “drop event” in the larger leak, so there is a grain of truth in it. The source of the leak also released their information ahead of the Pocket Codex datamine post.

So what does this mean for you? Well, if this leak is true, one could get some information about the release schedule for events and major expansions for Pokemon TCG Pocket. Three smaller events that consistently deliver new cards and content, as well as a major update every three months, would place it alongside a similar release schedule for the physical card game of four sets per year. This is, of course, a sandcastle prediction, as any splash of official information to the contrary – should it become public – would derail the whole thing.

Ultimately, as with all leaks, you have to take these things with a grain of salt. There is no official information on the update schedules for the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, nor is there an established release pattern for minor events, shop updates, and major card updates. The smart move is to flag these leaks, wait until January to see if they all develop as predicted, and go from there. Additionally, it is always a wise decision to keep an eye on the official Pokemon TCG Pocket social media platforms. So far they’ve only kept fans up to date with current events (like the in-game newsfeed), but that could certainly change as the desire for more future information grows.
