Oklahoma City Thunder star Chet Holmgren had to be helped off the field Sunday night against the Golden State Warriors after suffering a serious fall in the lane.

Holmgren, not even halfway through the first quarter at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, went up to block a layup by Andrew Wiggins along the baseline. After touching Wiggins, Holmgren landed hard directly on his right hip under the basket.

Wiggins made the layup and didn’t call a foul, but Holmgren remained under the basket in pain for quite a while before he was finally helped back to the locker room. Holmgren struggled to put any weight on his right leg as he left the court.

The Thunder quickly ruled Holmgren out after halftime with a hip injury. He finished the game with four rebounds while shooting 0-for-3 from the field. Further details about his injury are not yet known.

Holmgren, whom the Thunder selected with the No. 2 overall pick in 2022 out of Gonzaga, missed his entire first season in the league due to a foot injury sustained in a pro-am game. Last season, his first real year in the league, he averaged 16.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game and helped Oklahoma City to its first playoff appearance since 2020.

Holmgren entered Sunday averaging 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in nine games this season. The Thunder held an overall record of 8-1 heading into Sunday’s contest.
